Hemlock by Kiersten Modglin ~ 5⭐

Genres: Psychological Suspense & Romance ~ Release Date: August 31, 2023

REVIEW: Holy Moley! I know I have a new favorite Kiersten Modglin book! I just finished Hemlock last night. You absolutely have to buy yourself a copy for the Weekend. I can’t think of a better way to spend the Labor Day Weekend. It won’t take you three days to read because once you start this book, you won’t put it down. I absolutely, hands down love this book. Let me tell you why.

This is not the typical book I’m used to from Kiersten. It is more of a romance with some supernatural added in and a few twists along the way. I always love her twists and turns in a story. I understand that this book may be a bit more like her early books. I have not had a chance to go back and read all of her books yet. One day, I will.

The characters! Wow! I fell in love with Tucker. He is a real sweetheart and I am not sure there is a man alive who is as sweet and patient as this guy. Any girl would be lucky to have a man like him. The other man in the story is Clayton. From the beginning I could see he was a little selfish. Maggie is the main character and Clayton was a lifelong friend that she has loved for many years. Some people don’t appreciate what is in front of their face until it isn’t there anymore. Sound familiar?

Maggie moves back to her hometown of Myers after a breakup with a boyfriend of five years. Yes, he shows up in the story also. So, you have a lot to figure out while reading this book. Anyway, the hometown is small. You know, everyone knows everyone and their business. Just the kind of place I love. You always have your favorite restaurants and haunts. Did I just say haunts?

When Maggie arrives at her new home some strange things begin to happen. Boy, do they ever! That’s what I mean about supernatural being added into the romance. I have to give her credit, I don’t think I could have even tried to live there. That house was something else.

If you have been a reader of Kiersten Modglin, then you must read Hemlock! Oh my. It is not what I have come to know as her normal but I think she can write anything she wants and keep you glued to the page. She is one of those authors for me that I don’t need to know what the book is about before opening it up to read it. By the end of the first chapter or first page, I’m lost in Kiersten’s world.

If you love romance, suspense and the supernatural this book is for you. I am going to put this right up there with one of the best books I’ve read this year! You will enjoy it. I am sure of that. Until next time…Happy Reading!

Cop A Feel by Hilary Grossman ~ 5⭐

Genre: Rom Com ~ Release Date: August 28, 2023

REVIEW: Cop A Feel was such a fun book to read. Oh my! It is the prequel to Cop An Attitude and Cop A Plea. Hilary Grossman pulled these books from sale and revamped them. Cop A Feel was previously Hot Cop Test and part of an anthology. She expanded the story and made it a full length rom com and the first book in the series.

She has changed the covers on all the books and added scenes to the second and third book. This is a game changer! I am so excited to read the new and improved series.

Hilary is a master of rom com and I’ve read several of her books. These books are HOT but, nothing this old lady can’t handle. I loved Cop A Feel and the characters. I know you will too.

I absolutely can’t wait to read the revamped versions of books Cop An Attitude and Cop A Plea. I hope you join me in supporting an author who certainly knows how to entertain and carry you away from your everyday boring life! Until next time…Happy Reading!

Those were the first words he said to me… Don’t jump to conclusions. It’s not what you think.

Unfortunately.

I guess I should explain…

Ten years and countless disastrous first dates later, I still can’t get the hot cop out of my head.

Then life throws me a curveball. I find myself back in my hometown. Once again, Alex comes to my aid. But this time it’s like fireworks on the 4th of July—explosive and oh-so-hot. We can’t resist the magnetic pull between us.

Perfect, right?

Wrong!

Alex is allergic to commitment, and I live across the country. Could the odds be any more against us?

Will I be able to convince Alex that life’s too short to resist the irresistible? Or will we end up as just another hilarious footnote in the book of failed romances? Find out in “Cop A Feel,” the latest swoon-worthy laugh-out-loud romantic comedy from author Hilary Grossman.

Bleed by Emerald O’Brien ~ 5⭐

Genre: Slasher ~ Release Date: August 31, 2023

REVIEW: Bleed by Emerald O’Brien is by her terms a Slasher novel. I am going to tell you right now that I have never read a Slasher novel in my entire life. This one was out of the world fun to read. I will probably never read another Slasher book by anyone except Emerald. I trust her with my life.

First of all, you could almost hear the sinister music in the background while reading this book. My heart was pounding out of my chest at times. Lord have Mercy, this book will scare the daylights out of you! I wanted to use another word besides daylights but, I am afraid my review would get blocked and I really needed y’all read this review and to read the latest new book from Emerald O’Brien!

This book comes out August 31st just in time for gearing up for Halloween. In fact, this book takes place leading up to, during and just after Halloween. By the way, I am not handing out candy this year nor am I going to any parties. I’m going to be home reading a  ROMANCE book with my doors locked! Thank you very much, Emerald!

Emerald does a great job developing her characters. I had to pay attention to character names and who they were. Part of that was my age and the other part was the two main female characters had male names. I got used to those quite quickly but, there were quite a few characters in this book to keep track of. We can probably stack that up to my age. Should a 68 year old woman read a Slasher book? Yes, she should. Just don’t trust everyone who writes in the genre. Our hearts can and should only beat so fast!

If you love the Slasher books, I assume this is right in your wheelhouse. If you’ve never read one like me, I say go for it! You might find something you love besides mystery and thriller books. This is just another step into the deep. Until next time…Happy Reading!

From the minute I picked up book one and read the first page, I was hooked. Believe it or not, this is Kay Bratt’s first book in this genre of Women Sleuths. Every book gets better and better. I rated book one 5 stars and every book after that has been 5 stars because you can’t get any better than that in the book world. I’m always on pins and needles when a new one is coming out. I can’t wait to settle in and read.

I actually finished this book a while ago. I had to go out of town for a week and when I went to post on pub day, I realized I had not written my review. I guess that happens when you are packing for a trip. I was so busy while I was gone, the time to sit down and write escaped me. Now, this is my first order of business and then back to reading!

Nobody Told Me, is again, the best book so far in the series. Many of the things that happen hits close to home for this family. They pull together and continue on as they strive to rebuild their family bonds and move on toward the future.

Lucy Grey is the main character and she has pretty much taken care of everyone in the family. Being a detective in town suits her caretaking personality. She has a big heart. I love the other folks in town that we have met and the members of her immediate family. Kay knows how to develop a character and she knows how to draw you into her story.

I can’t tell you the specifics but, the end of this book left me with my mouth hanging open. I was in shock! I still am and can’t wait until the next book comes out. I have a deep yearning to know what happens next!

If you love great family drama, a small hometown, and detective mysteries, you will fall head over heels for this series. Go read it now! Until next time…Happy Reading!

Comfort in Lavender Valley by Tammy L Grace ~ 5⭐

Genre: Women’s Literature ~ Release Date: August 16, 2023

REVIEW: Comfort In Lavender Valley is book five of Sisters of the Heart. There are six books and I am already feeling a little heartbroken that the next book will be the final book for this series. Tammy L. Grace writes the most heartwarming stories with characters you come to love and care for and settings I want to live in. She writes books that take place in a world where I want to live.

This story is about Lydia. We find out why she has never settled down and why she really needs Lavender Valley and her Sisters of the Heart. So far we have come to know most of the characters. They have all had their trials in life and need a place to land and people to support them. Jewel was their foster mother at one time just not at the same time. All of these ladies were close to her heart and she somehow knew they would need her farm as a place of healing. Not only that, they all seem to have the special talents that will keep the farm place going as long as they need it.

The Sisters of the Heart are all preparing for the Lavender Festival that takes place each year in Lavender Valley. This was a special project developed by Jewel and I believe it is a way to help provide for the business owners and to bring the community closer and give them a feeling of belonging. Jewel was a pretty smart cookie. She was a foster mom to many children over the years and she even has a dog rescue! I don’t think Tammy Grace is physically able to write a book without dogs as important characters. What could be better?

You really need to read these books to see how the special talents of all the sisters work together and why Jewel felt they would need her farm and the support of the other sisters. These books are very intricately woven together. You will love the main characters and the other people in town that you also get to meet. There are a few scoundrels along the way and that makes it all the more interesting.

I recommend these books for a binge read. I hate waiting in between but, at this point if you have to wait for the last one, it won’t be long. These books make you feel like you are wrapped in a blanket of love. Until next time…Happy Reading!

Weekend on Sullivan’s Island by Ashley Farley ~ 5⭐

Genres: Women’s & Southern Fiction ~ Release Date: August 8, 2023

REVIEW: My “Weekend on Sullivan’s Island” was fabulous and I hope you’ll enjoy yours too! I had such a fun visit with all of these characters and finding out how their lives are panning out. Some are having some problems and some are going along just fine. Just what you might think. Let me tell you, this is not a boring book. Ashley Farley keeps us on our toes as we enjoy our Weekend on Sullivan’s Island.

Apparently, this book and After the Storm are stand alone novels and not part of a series but, they read as a series. I don’t know if this was overlooked while posting on Amazon. Ms. Farley was in the middle of a life changing move as this book was making its way to our hands. I think there is more to the story to come so I’m hoping we are going to at least get another book with these lovely characters. I have really enjoyed them. They are the children of a previous series that I have not read yet and I find that is not necessary. I am looking forward to going back to reading that series too.

This is also one of those authors for me that is a go to when looking for something great to read. I don’t need to read the synopsis on her new books that are coming out to know it will be something that I will enjoy. She writes some of the best characters and her settings are always something to look forward to. The storylines are often intricate but they are not hard to follow.

Ashley Farley is an accomplished writer with a huge selection of books to choose from. If you haven’t read anything by her, I highly recommend any of her books although there are many I haven’t read yet. She never disappoints me. I recommend a Weekend on Sullivan’s Island! Until next time…Happy Reading!

The Secret Midwife by Soraya M Lane ~ 5⭐

Genre: Historical Fiction ~ Release Date: August 1, 2023

REVIEW: Once again I am reminded that Soraya M. Lane writes some of the best Historical Fiction you will find in the book world today. She bases her novels on Historical facts and creates such wonderful characters. I love when I can read a book and learn something along the way and also get so involved with the characters that I actually forget I’m reading a book. She writes books that I don’t want to put down until I’m done. Sadly, I have to.

The Secret Midwife was one of those books. I was so wrapped up in the lives of the characters and all the horrible things they were going through to stay alive at Auschwitz. This book is not based on actual characters but on the many experiences of the Polish Resistance. Soraya Lane actually prompted me to do a little research on my own on a few subjects in her book. One of them shocked me so much, I had to see if it really happened and it did!

I loved the duel timeline. It was about 90% during the war years if not more. The other part was told by one of the characters that survived internment at Auschwitz. I have read several books that took place during this time and her book was spot on. Maybe the conditions were a bit worse than I remembered reading. Maybe, I just took it harder this time because I was invested in the characters. Emilia is the Midwife and Aleksy is the doctor who helps her treat some of the women.

There is a love story that develops between Emilia and Aleksy. It starts as admiration and friendship. It is very secondary to the story. It was a beautiful relationship that was allowed to grow after the war. The things that happened at Auschwitz will break your heart. My heart is still a little broken for all those that suffered there and were not able to leave. Thousands a day were exterminated at Auschwitz.

If you enjoy learning while you read, getting involved with the characters and being able to feel all the feelings these folks suffered, you will absolutely love this book. We need these books to show us what really happened even though some believe it never happened in the first place. We need to know our history. Until next time…Happy Reading!

SYNOPSIS: From the bestselling author of The London Girls comes a story of courage and resilience amidst the horror of Auschwitz—and one woman’s last chance to share it with the world.

London, 1995: When on the fiftieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz a news broadcast runs an appeal for information on the identity of a midwife who saved hundreds of lives, Emilia knows it is time to finally tell her story.

Occupied Poland, 1942: Despite the constant presence of German soldiers in her village, Emilia is allowed certain freedoms as a midwife—the most precious is innocently cycling past Nazi checkpoints to the homes of expectant mothers on her rounds. But Emilia has a secret: for years she’s also been visiting the hidden Jewish mothers and working for the resistance…until she is betrayed.

Suddenly a prisoner of Auschwitz, Emilia is surrounded by horror and despair. When she is put to work as a midwife in the camp, she realises that she has a chance to bring a small glimmer of hope to the pregnant women of Auschwitz. Alongside a brave imprisoned doctor, Aleksy, and an innocent outcast, Lena, she comes up with a dangerous plan. A plan that if discovered could mean a fate far worse than death, but if they act undetected, they could save countless lives…

The Secret Midwife is a work of fiction, but inspired by many real-life accounts of the Polish resistance, the brave doctors, nurses and midwives imprisoned in the camps and those who fought to save as many lives as possible in Poland during World War II.
