Analyzing the Prescotts by Dawn Reno Langley ~ 5⭐

Genre: LBGTQ+ Parenting & Families ~ Release Date: January 4, 2024

REVIEW:

Analyzing the Prescotts by Dawn Reno Langley was a book that at first I wasn’t sure I was going to like. I learned a few words while reading this book that I have never used or come across before. That, my friends, is okay! I love reading books that teach me something I didn’t know. This is the first book I have read by Professor Langley. It probably won’t be my last.

I have to confess that I had an ulterior motive for contacting the author and requesting to read her book. This book is about a family in crisis. The father in this book has left his family to transition to a female. We have a family member that is transgender and I wanted to understand a bit more about what this is all about. I wanted to understand the thought processes and the ins and outs of what they are feeling. The main thing is I want to understand and have knowledge.

The wife who was left behind has a very hard time coming to terms with what has come out in the open. Her children have a hard time because of the way she is and is not handling the situation. The children being younger have an easier time accepting their father. The book is centered on the counseling sessions that the family goes through both individually and as a group. The therapist they choose is also dealing with her own issues both professional and personal.

I was engrossed with the characters. We learn about each of them through the eyes of other family members and the eyes of the therapist. Some of the family members write about how they are feeling and processing. I love how Prof. Langley lets us learn about each of them and most of all learn about transgender people. There are some twists in this story that I didn’t see coming and that only served to pull me in more.

This was a book that I took my time to read. I wanted to absorb what she had to teach me. I didn’t want to rush through it and miss some important points. I wanted to get all I could out of this story and I think I did. I am more empathetic and sympathetic to the whole topic and what transgenders and their families are experiencing. I highly recommend this book. I always love to learn as I read. I think that is the best way to educate ourselves. Until next time…Happy Reading!

SYNOPSIS:

The heart-wrenching tale of a family in crisis and the therapist who makes the tough decision to save herself.

Every member of the Prescott family struggles with identity issues when the father, Hailey Prescott, leaves the family to live life as a woman, sending them all tumbling into emotions so violent they threaten to tear the family fabric to shreds. When Dr. Cotton Barnes, a happily married psychologist from Raleigh, North Carolina, signs on to treat the family, she is challenged to the edges of her own fragile boundaries as cracks in the veneer of the Prescotts’ lives become craters.

The family members relate their stories in their chosen voices, each narrative in a different format. Marcus, the youngest, speaks to Cotton through his avatars; Gray, the mother, distances herself by referring to herself in the third person; the oldest child, Janis-a self-avowed loner-uses a defunct social media app; while the middle child, Cheryl, tries to keep everyone personally happy in person; and Hailey, the novelist father, hides behind her journals.

The Prescotts take turns breaking down and breaking through a roller coaster of emotions that mirrors what’s happening in the Raleigh area: a series of LGBTQ+ hate crimes rocks the community to its core. Telling herself she must save them, Cotton stalks the family, but when Hailey Prescott becomes the latest victim of brutality, Cotton is forced to make a decision that will determine whether she saves her own marriage or the Prescotts. Or herself.

Analyzing the Prescotts is the latest from Dawn Reno Langley, a novelist who Foreword Reviews says writes with “authority and fine craftsmanship.”

Starting Over by Kay Bratt ~ 5⭐

Genre: Women Sleuths ~ Release Date: December 19, 2023

REVIEW: Have you ever innocently started a series and later loved it so much you couldn’t fathom not having a new book in the series? I have and many times have been sad to see the series end. Today, I am happy because Starting Over, the eighth book in the Hart’s Ridge series by Kay Bratt, was supposed to end at book eight. I am so excited to say that she has decided to continue the series and we are at least going to have book nine. I’m not sure how many more there will be. This series is so popular and that was the driving force to continue. So, if you haven’t read it yet, jump in at book one and binge this series. It will be worth your time and maybe we will get book 10!  Let’s keep it going.

Kay’s series takes place in a small town in the mountains. I love small towns. Don’t you? Taylor is the police officer in the family and has kept her family together for years and has transferred her talents to her town that she also loves. This series brings us not only the family of Taylor but we get to know her family on the police force and some main characters in the town. There is always something going on in this town and they give the police and the detectives a run for their money. Taylor dreams of being a lead  detective at some point but right now she is doing both jobs.

At this time in the series, I am invested in the characters and feel like I know them as my own. I have enjoyed seeing them all making strides to move forward with their lives. Most of them live together at the shelter they have started for abandoned and abused animals. Are you an animal lover like I am?  I think we’re finding a lot in common!

The crime in this book involves the abduction of one officer’s wife and they are trying to find her. The other crime involves the police chief’s niece. She tried to help an elderly woman she was being a caregiver to and got herself in trouble.

This book will keep you interested but, it also will keep you guessing what is going to happen next. Not only with the criminal investigations but with Taylor and her family. There is so much to enjoy about these books. They are certainly binge worthy. If you are like me, love small towns, police stories, family saga’s and getting to know new friends then I highly recommend the Hart’s Ridge series. Until next time…Happy Reading!

Christmas Hearts by Tammy L. Grace ~ 5⭐

Genre: Holiday Fiction ~ Release Date: November 17, 2023

REVIEW: I have had the wonderful pleasure of having a nice visit back in Granite Ridge with the lovely folks that live there and I feel like I’ve known these folks for the last three years. I started reading and reviewing Soul Sisters at Cedar Mountain Lodge from the very beginning and have read every book in the series. I think there are two more coming out this year and they are on my radar so keep your eyes open for my reviews.

This book is about Leslie and Eric. They were married several years prior and relocated to Seattle. They eventually divorced and Eric moved back to be near family in Granite Ridge. Three years ago Leslie lost her father and moved back to help her mother with the Christmas Tree farm that belongs to her family. She has avoided Eric like the plague. You should know if you live in a small town, you are going to eventually run into someone you may not want to see. I’m keeping my mouth shut about what occurs when that happens!

If you’ve read any of the other books in this series you will recognize cameo appearances by other characters you remember. That’s what I love about this series. You get to catch up with the characters you’ve come to love in the other books. This is such a heartwarming series and since it takes place at Christmas time, that just makes it a little more special.

If you know Tammy Grace, you know she always includes a dog or two…or more! I love the furbabies and I want to be able to sit down to love on them a little bit. They are the ones that truly bring “special” to these books. I always wish that my babies were as well behaved as the ones in the books!

If you love small towns, holiday stories with the addition of good dogs and characters you  know well, then this book and series is for you. By the way, the first book in the series is still a free download! It is called Christmas Sisters and if you haven’t started the series, now is the time! Until next time…Happy Reading!

Hello Goodbye by Kay Bratt ~ 5⭐

Genre: Women Sleuths ~ Release Date: November 16, 2023

REVIEW: Hello Goodbye written by Kay Bratt is her seventh installment of the Hart’s Ridge series. I know I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again…This is the BEST book in the series. Honestly, this series gets better and better. Originally there were only going to be eight books but, I’ve recently heard that she is going to continue this series for a while. They will be coming out at a little slower pace. She has been writing and releasing books at a wild pace. I don’t blame her a bit for slowing down and never worry, I will let you know when a new one releases.

This book, just like the last one, left me with my mouth hanging open. I couldn’t believe that she just left me (and everyone else) hanging out to dry like that. I know I have a while to wait for the next book and I know I just said I didn’t blame her for slowing down but, Holy Cow!

This book sees Taylor grappling with her past and her present. Sam is helping her find closure to a painful chapter in her life. She does find closure (I think) but, so much more damage is done to not only her but also her family. Sam is dealing with news of his own and Taylor doesn’t know how to accept what has happened to Sam.

From the minute I picked up this book until I finished it, I could not put it down. I always seem to run into the next day and when I do my dreams are filled with scenarios of what is to come. This book was not any different. There is so much I want to tell you about this book and I just can’t. I don’t want to spoil your fun and give too much away. My heart was broken for a few of the characters and soared for others. This book is packed and you will definitely want to know what has happened to a few of the characters we met in the past.

If you like police and detective books, a little romance, family interactions and small town living you will enjoy this series. There are characters in this series that I will always remember and those that will always hold a piece of my heart. This is truly a special series that I highly recommend. This is Kay’s first foray into this genre but you would never know it. I think she has surpassed her wildest dreams with Hart’s Ridge! So, Until next time…Happy Reading!

Christmas Comfort by Ev Bishop ~ 5⭐

Genre: Holiday Fiction ~ Release Date: November 16, 2023

REVIEW: Christmas Comfort by Ev Bishop is the second new book to release this year for Soul Sisters at Cedar Mountain Lodge. This series is eighteen books strong with the third release coming out tomorrow. I absolutely fell in love with this series when it began a few years ago and was chosen to read all of the original releases that year. I have read all of the books and still want more. That has to tell you how great this series is.

Christmas Comfort is about Stevie. She is a chef and brings us yummy descriptions of her food creations. This year she is not looking forward to Christmas. Things are busy and her marriage seems to be on the back burner. She is married to sizzling hot Jackson. She goes through the motions but believes her marriage is in trouble. She knows no matter what she will be ok. She has her mom and sisters and her little boy. She really wants her marriage and the time they used to spend together.

I love all of these characters in this family and if you are reading this series too you probably agree. They are kind to each other and always have their backs. Whether it is child care or just an ear to listen. Wouldn’t it be nice to have that kind of support? We all need help on this road we call life. This family knows how to love one another.

I’m afraid Christmas won’t be Christmas without my annual updates from the Soul Sisters at Cedar Mountain Lodge. I love the way all of the authors write. They are so tuned into each other and this family that you won’t notice who wrote what book. It is as if each book comes from just one writer. It flows so beautifully.

If you love small town stories, clean love stories, family love and respect then this series is for you. The first book is called Christmas Sisters and is still a free download. Check it out and see if you don’t fall as fast as I did. Until next time…Happy Reading!

SYNOPSIS: Random circumstances brought them together. Love made them family.

Never in Chef Stevie Fox’s life, or not since being taken in by her foster mom Maddie anyway, has she imagined that she’d ever dread Christmas. But here she is . . .

Seven years ago, she said “I do” to the sizzling love of her life, Jackson Bassett. Their first years together were a delicious stew of happy hormones, new parent bliss, and thriving business buzz. Now, while her passion and commitment are as hearty as ever, she fears Jackson’s has become watered down. And then there’s the pretty assistant manager he spends way too much time with.

Stevie may be a dreamer extraordinaire, but she’s also a realist. With her early childhood and the things she and her loved ones have survived and overcome, how could she be anything but? No matter how she wants to believe otherwise, her marriage is in trouble.

She knows whatever happens, she’ll be okay. She has her precious son, Joey. Her mom, Maddie. A surprisingly healed relationship with her birth mother, Marilyn. She has her beloved soul sisters and a network of family ties that she could never have even begun to fantasize about as a kid. She is beyond grateful for all she has. And yet . . . and yet. The idea of losing the love she believed in, counted on, and still so deeply feels fills her with sorrow too deep for comfort.

Christmas will come as it always does, and Stevie will work hard like she always does to make it special for her son and family, but oh, how she dreams, yearns, and longs . . .

Falling in love is only ever the beginning of a story. Staying in love is the ongoing series.

If you’re a fan of heartwarming second-chance holiday romance and sister sagas, you’ll love this new addition to the Soul Sisters at Cedar Mountain Lodge series!

Christmas Promise by Violet Howe ~ 5⭐

Genre: Holiday Fiction ~ Release Date: November 15, 2023

REVIEW: Christmas Promise by Violet Howe is such a heart-warming new book in the Soul Sisters at Cedar Mountain Lodge. I am extraordinarily blessed to be able to read and review the three new books this year that continue the Soul Sisters lives. I have loved this series since it started and was originally chosen to read all of the books that were originally released. I’m now worried that it won’t seem like Christmas without a visit to Cedar Mountain and a visit with the family of Soul Sisters.

This book is about Lindsey, who if you remember, is Maddy’s sister. They did not meet each other until late in life. It was a secret that both of their mother’s kept. In this book they continue their story. Lindsey learns that a life of solitude and all work is not as important as family. She is changing her priorities in life when she crosses paths with a high-school best friend turned sweetheart that she pushed away years ago.

I loved this book and the characters. I love seeing Maddy and Lindsey share sister time and doing things that they didn’t get a chance to do growing up. I love how this family of soul sisters come together to help each other out and really form a support group for each other. Two of the sisters are just mentioned in these three books. They no longer live in Granite Ridge.

There are so many different kinds of love in these books. We all need that at Christmas time and if you don’t have that in your own family, these books will give you a little taste of that and warm your heart. So, if you love sisterly and familial love, later in life love and have a love for small towns then this series of books are for you. If you haven’t started them yet and love a good long series, this one is currently at eighteen books. The first one is Christmas Sisters and is still a free download. Get it today and start on a Christmas adventure. Until next time…Happy Reading!

No Funny Business & Go On, Girl by Hilary Grossman ~ 5⭐

Genre: Women’s Humorous Fiction ~ Release Date: November 6, 2023

REVIEW: No Funny Business by Hilary Grossman is her new Novella. It is actually kind of a prequel to Go On, Girl. I really enjoyed this novella and immediately sent a note to Hilary asking if she was continuing the story because I wanted more. You know me, I’m Miss More on the commercial on TV that is always wanting more. When I find a good series, I’m in for the long haul and this book was only a taste.

It is about Kara and Jonathan and how their relationship started. If you have read these books, Kara and Jonathan bought Craig and Sydney’s house when they left Forest River. I enjoyed getting to learn how these two got together and a little bit about what happened.

This is one of those relationships that should have never gotten started in the first place because Jonathan was Kara’s employer. Those usually don’t go well. I can’t tell you too much of what happens because the book is very short and I don’t want to ruin all the fun for you.

If you’ve read any of the Forest River PTA Mom’s books, you will want to grab this one and spend a quiet evening by the fire reading all the continuing drama that takes place. I am not a mom but I have enjoyed the antics of the women in the PTA. Oh my goodness they think the world revolves around the PTA. If you are in for a few laughs and a little get away from everyday life, check out these books. Hilary Grossman has a way to make you laugh and forget your own problems. Unless of course you belong to a PTA like the one in Forest River! Until next time…Happy Reading!

SYNOPSIS: One of these days I’m really going to get myself into trouble…. And today might be that day!

You see, I have a terrible habit. Or maybe it’s more of a guilty pleasure… I love to eavesdrop.

Until now, I’ve only listened in on strangers’ conversations. But tonight, the focus of my curiosity is my billionaire boss—the super sexy man I’ve been crushing on since my first interview.

And Jonathan’s not having any old normal conversation… He just got dumped!

I know I should mind my own business and pretend I didn’t see or hear anything. But then I’d miss out on a rare opportunity to see him outside of the office.

Will this be corporate suicide or my one and only chance to get him to notice me?

REVIEW: I just had to go back and read Go On, Girl by Hilary Grossman after reading No Funny Business. Kara and Jonathan appeared way back in that book which was the first book in the Forest River PTA Mom’s series. The only one I hadn’t read. Hilary and I met when I started reviewing her books. The first book I read was book two, Mom Genes. I kept busy with reviewing and never seemed to find the time to go back and read Go On, Girl.

I’m glad I had the time this month to go back and read that first book because it was something I needed to read. Sydney and Craig are gearing up to leave Forest River and it will be after her first year on the PTA. They have been offered the deal of a lifetime from Kara and Jonathan for their home. They couldn’t pass it up. Sydney is like me in that she has become attached to her home that they put blood, sweat and tears into remodeling. Now, she has to leave. I have struggled with that lately and I needed to learn how she put it all into perspective.

In Go On, Girl you meet all of the main characters and get to know them and some of the things that have happened to cause drama in all of their lives. Let me tell you that the drama is not all sad and unhappy. Some of it is hilarious! I always love a book that will make me laugh out loud. Don’t you?

I think you will love the Forest River PTA Mom’s series. It will make you laugh and cry right along with the characters. These ladies will show you a good time. Now is the time to get your copy of No Funny Business and then go all the way back to book one Go On, Girl and binge read the whole series. You won’t be bored! Until next time…Happy Reading!

SYNOPSIS: Big Little Lies meets Class Mom!

Executive, wife, and mother of an outgoing first-grader, Sydney Clayton crushes her day-to-day obligations at work but flounders in the cutthroat world of parental politics.

She manages to avoid the local drama until she’s faced with an ultimatum: join the Forest River PTA or risk her daughter becoming a social outcast. Sydney reluctantly becomes treasurer, and takes the recently vacated position of the president’s sidekick. If protecting the children’s freedom of speech, one best friend ban at a time, isn’t complicated enough, Sydney and her husband receive an unexpected offer for their house they don’t think they can refuse.

Embroiled in the deception and manipulation rife among the elementary school moms, Sydney struggles. Should she sell the home she worked so hard to build in a town where betrayal runs rampant? Or should she stay put to avoid the fallout from uprooting her child? As Sydney focuses on what is best for her daughter, and lets go of her judgments, she finds friendship can develop in very unexpected ways.

Warm, witty, and wise, Go On, Girl dramatizes the dilemmas of life in the suburbs and the bonds shared by women.

“Hilary Grossman knocked it out of the park with her fourth novel. Go On, Girl is filled with humor and heart.” – Meredith Schorr – Best Selling Author of The Boyfriend Swap and The Blogger Girl Series

Do Not Open by Kiersten Modglin ~ 5⭐

Genre: Domestic Thriller ~ Release Date: October 31, 2023

REVIEW: Do Not Open by Kiersten Modglin was a book that has me conflicted in a few ways. I think I have given all the books I’ve read of hers five stars. I enjoyed them that much and some of them I would have given more than five stars. This one was close to four stars but it redeemed itself at the very end. I know…I need to explain myself without giving any of the surprises away. That is going to be a little hard to do.

This book is about an author that is contacted by a fan who offers her bleak world some hope. Although she has tried to research the person offering this life changing event, she is not able to find out much about him. She agrees to meet him and knows quite soon he is not who he says he is. She has spent years writing about heroines that save themselves and he has spent years studying her writing. He knows everything about her. She has to think fast.

There is a part of this book that hits close to home. Close to where Kiersten and I both live. That is part of what redeemed this book for me. There are several huge surprises at the end. The beginning and middle of the book are scary and nerve wracking and every bit of it is what you come to expect with a Kiersten Modglin book. So, not really a lot of surprises along the way. Like I said, the ending is WOW! I wanted to cry at the end. That never happens with one of Kiersten’s books.

If you love Kiersten Modglin’s books you will want to read this one too. You are probably as hooked on her writing as I am. If you haven’t read one of her books, you will wonder what hit you when you get done. This is a good book. It is just not one of my favorites. The last few books were ones that kept moving into my favorite spot. Not this one. I think you will know why when you have your heart ripped out!

This book will be released on October 31, 2023. Just in time for a Halloween night read. Get yourself a thermos filled with your favorite drink, your favorite snack and a nice comfy throw and prepare to be blown away. Until next time…Happy Reading!

SYNOPSIS: On the day author Mari Montgomery receives the email, she has little left to live for.

The message—simple yet utterly life-changing—offers a glimmer of hope to her dismal existence. It’s the opportunity of a lifetime, and if she takes it, it could change everything.

Mari’s immediate sense of unease is eclipsed only by her curiosity—elicited from the supposed fan on the other end of the email. Unsatisfied despite doing her due diligence, and with no way to discern the legitimacy of the sender, Mari takes a leap of faith and replies.

What harm could come from one innocent message?

Soon, as she comes face to face with her ‘number one fan,’ it’s all too clear things are not what they first appeared. Now trapped by a villain far more sinister than she could’ve crafted herself, the fate awaiting her is inspired by the darkest depths of the monsters in her own novels.

In order to escape and survive, Mari must use the strength of the heroines she’s spent years writing about. But this villain has spent years inside her worlds, too.

How will she defeat an evil who has learned from the best?

For fans of Misery, YOU, and Behind Closed Doors, million-copy bestselling author Kiersten Modglin brings us a haunting tale of obsession and survival in the form of a writer’s worst nightmare come to life.

Long Journey Home by Ashley Farley ~ 5⭐

Genre: Southern Family Fiction ~ Release Date: October 26, 2023

REVIEW: Once again Ashley Farley did not disappoint me. Long Journey home is the first book in a new series she is calling Marsh Point. If this is the first book, I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!

Most of you know that I stumbled upon Ms. Farley’s books and enjoyed them so much, I found myself looking her up and begging to be on her review team. I have not looked back once. She is one of those authors that I don’t need to know what the book is about before I read it. I have enjoyed the characters and storylines in every single book so far.

This book is about a family that has grown up with a lot of adversity in their lives. The mother is an alcoholic and the father couldn’t always deal with her and the kids. There are four kids, three girls and a boy who are adults now and dealing with the hurts of their childhood.

As you can imagine, they are dealing with abandonment issues and trying to figure out how they are going to put the past behind them. Ashton is the oldest sister and she inherits the family estate. You all know how much the death of a parent can tear the family apart. Someone always gets hurt. The mother had her reasons. Their father is still alive and is a big part of the story.

I loved Ashton and all that she had to go through to pick up the pieces of all of their lives including her own. I didn’t care for her sister. Her brother was ok but he was the one who would not seek help to sort out his past. Their father was someone I wanted to put my arms around. He was hurting and at other times he brought the story to life.

Long Journey Home was a book I had a hard time putting down. I loved the book and didn’t want to see it come to an end. This is going to be her best series yet. I can’t wait to read more. If you love a good family saga, one that you can sink your teeth into then this is a great series to add to your TBR. I think you will love it as much as I do. Until next time…Happy Reading!

SYNOPSIS: From beyond the grave, Ashton’s mother leaves a mysterious legacy that upends her world. Eileen Darby, the heiress to the Merriweather fortune, has entrusted her oldest daughter with the family’s waterfront estate on Catawba Sound in South Carolina’s Lowcountry, bequeathing virtually nothing to her other three children. This lavish bequest is more than a gift; it’s a cryptic message, a puzzle interlaced with the troubled history of their dysfunctional family. As Ashton embarks on renovating the old home, she finds herself haunted by secrets lurking in the shadows of her memory. What is her mother trying to communicate, and what will she uncover as she delves into the murkiest corners of the memories she can’t recall?”

Ashton’s husband is a proclaimed financial wizard, a mastermind who claims to have turned her recent investment into a fortune. Yet, he refuses to provide the account statements to verify it. With their marriage teetering on the brink, Ashton’s dwindling trust gives way to mounting suspicions. Is he genuinely the financial virtuoso he purports to be, or is there a more sinister game afoot? As her marital bonds unravel, Ashton finds herself ensnared in a tangled web of deception. Each thread she tugs unravels a path leading her ever closer to a truth she may not be ready to confront. When she loses her way, she looks to a friend from her past to help her find herself again.

In this thrilling journey of discovery and deceit, Ashton must confront the ghosts of her past and the demons of her present. Long Journey Home is a twisted labyrinth of mystery and betrayal, where every corner holds another clue and every path leads Ashton deeper into uncertainty.
